Wholesome Roobedo since 1999 – it all makes sense!

Question: How carefully do you select the food you eat?  And do you think so carefully about where your clothes come from too? Do you know what *GOTS cotton and sustainable products means?

When I started setting up Roobedo, almost 20 years ago, I kept describing my work and practise as ‘wholesome’. And only now do I fully understand what I was trying to say, and I am proud to say that I am still continually striving to produce sustainable, organic and natural products.

 This is my first 1999 collection of tops, in cotton, wool and microfleece – can you spot the rake holding up the line?  This style has been adapted slightly, but still going strong, now with an added cowl neck design. cowl neck tee

Things have changed so much in the world since 1999 particularly in the textiles and clothing industry.   I was chuffed to own a pager then and still used a fax machine daily, and luckily for me I had great friends, Hedley and  Juls, who encouraged me to set up my website and get my domain name, which meant I could move about and make and sell from wherever I lived.   I love the slow fashion movement and use the best Scottish fabrics such as Harris tweed and Glenlyon tweed alongside GOTS certified organic cottons and denim as well as recycled and vintage cloths.  Now, also aiming for zero waste, I keep all my textile waste to a minimum by making-to-order and keeping and re-purposing scraps wherever possible.  Ethical fashion and fair trade is an extremely passionate focus.

Here are some definitions to consider…

‘Organic’ means ‘relating to or derived from living matter’

*’Sustainable’ means ‘conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources’

‘Natural’ means various but includes ‘having had a minimum of processing or preservative treatment’

*‘GOTS’ (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
