I work two days a week as a part-time lecturer at Dundee and Angus College, in the Textiles Department. I have done this for 15 years, and absolutely love it.
My main focus is pattern cutting and garment technology and themes have revolved more and more around re-using and re-purposing textiles. This term we are exploring the new phenomenom – TRASHION. But it’s not really new, it just has a clever, catchy new name. Basically, making great stuff out of old stuff. We research what designers are doing out there and tie it into the unit outcomes that we deliver from the SQA syllabus, HND level.
Recent projects have reused old sheets from Fishers Laundry, waxed cotton from Halley Stevensons, Knitted Cashmere from Todd & Duncan as well as scraps donated by local independent designers and dressmakers clearing out their attic and storerooms. Old trampoline nets, old leather sofa covers and vinyl banners have also made their way into some students’ work.
